Working Smarter ...

Research by Kama Roberts funded by PAVO

WHY?
The information on this page is to help you become more effective, whether you are an individual artist or an organisation. There is a huge amount of help and advice out there - and potential partners - but you need to know what to ask. This section suggests some of the issues to think about, and where to start looking for answers.

WORK IN PROGRESS
This work has been supported by a KICKSTART grant from PAVO, funded by ERDF money, and we gratfeully acknowledge their support - but it is only a beginning. Let us know whether you find it useful, what else you would find useful, and what advice you have to offer others.

We will publish some of the contributions on this site. But a word of caution.
Powys Arts Forum is a slender organisation, deliberately so. It does not want to grow and grow until it becomes unsustainable. We want instead to foster links, help develop a community of artists. The best way of giving and receiving advice, is by meeting others. Networking. That's what we'll continue to focus on. These hints are just a way of getting you started.

DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT
None of the material on this website comes with a guarantee. The advice may not appropriate for your circumstances. Please check before taking any action. We repeat, all we are doing is helping you to think about the issues, and sharing some of our experience.

BE CREATIVE!
Always talk to others, find out what help is in your own backyard. Sometimes it is a case of thinking laterally, getting help from unsuspected quarters. Significant change comes from new ways of approaching things, as much as from technical innovations.

Charles Handy in his book Understanding Voluntary Organisations points out that tractors alone didn't achieve a revolution in farming, it also needed someone also to devise purchase. Before that most farmers were too poor to afford the tractors. Organisational change was the breakthrough, then the technology could be properly harnessed.

Discussion Topics
The In back section includes some additional topics from individual members of Powys Arts Forum. We will add to this from time to time, so if you have any experiences or topics you would like to air please get in touch.

There is also a message board for you to use.

LICENSING ACT
The implications of this are still being slowly explored. Here is a comment from Shakespeare Link's Sue Best:

A word of caution: we have recently been going through the process of getting the necessary licences, opting to apply for a full premises licence since we anticipate holding several events during the summer season. We have found the process has been far more expensive than expected, as the application goes from one department of the Council to the next - via Planning, Fire, Police, Health and Safety, Highways etc, each department with its own proper agenda and each requiring an individual payment. It’s great that such controls and support should be in place, but check out the full costs of your application when considering which sort of licence will best suit.
Sue Best

Philip Freeman was involved in campaigning against the Licensing Act, click here to read part of an article he wrote for Planet in 2003.

Planet is a bi-monthly magazine covering the arts, culture and politics in Wales and beyond with features on and interviews with contemporary Welsh artists and writers; political analysis, both of Welsh affairs and international issues; poetry and fiction.
